Ce concept est mentionn\u00e9 pour la premi\u00e8re fois sur <a href=\"https:\/\/juliebayleyblog.wordpress.com\/2016\/06\/20\/why-ref-is-a-bit-like-your-mother-in-law\/\">le blogue de Julie, le 22 juin 2016<\/a>.<\/em><br \/>\nIt\u2019s clear that impact is growing swiftly within international research agendas.\u00a0 I\u2019ve had many discussions recently with colleagues across various ponds for whom the dark cloud of impact is looming. Many seem to be looking to the UK to learn from our REF experience, and to be frank that\u2019s not a bad idea at all.\u00a0 Where impact is concerned it\u2019s fair to say the UK is both specialised and battle-worn in equal measure. Unlike many of our international peers, our sector has been driven by centralised impact assessment, rather than broader dialogues of \u2018benefits\u2019 and \u2018knowledge mobilisation\u2019.\u00a0 It is an approach with pros and cons, many of which we\u2019re still unpicking.\u00a0 Certainly the wonderfully engaged discussion at the recent ARMA Impact Special Interest Group (SIG) meeting at the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.armaconference.com\/\">annual conference <\/a>shows just how much we still need to do to integrate, normalise and support impact in its most meaningful terms.<br \/>\nImpact for many of us is a good thing.\u00a0 We welcome the focus on positively influencing the world beyond the university walls, and let\u2019s face it, this in itself is not a new agenda.\u00a0 For applied researchers (myself very much included), we have always sought to qualitatively contribute\u00a0solutions to\u00a0social problems.\u00a0\u00a0However\u00a0the more formal assessment driven (REF) impact agenda shifts\u00a0such virtuous rhetoric towards reductionism and selectivity. REF is a bit like your mother in law who manages to completely overlook the 6 hours of cleaning you\u2019ve done and focus instead on the speck of dust you\u2019ve left behind the TV.\u00a0It\u2019s a one-off assessment which ignores\u00a0how frantically you\u2019ve cooked, ironed, and incentivised-your-children-to-behave-less-like-chimps. And like REF, usually results in a large glass of wine.<br \/>\nI don\u2019t say this to dismiss REF.\u00a0 If anything, REF has accelerated the importance of impact within academia and for that I am thankful.\u00a0 With the puerile analogy above aside, I strongly\u00a0urge\u00a0those for whom impact is emerging to really take time to consider how impact \u2018works\u2019.\u00a0\u00a0A formal impact agenda raises challenges across the academic sector, arguably posing most difficulties for fundamental research and that with less easily measurable endpoints (eg. arts and humanities).\u00a0 Assessment-driven approaches risk reducing\u00a0impact value to a small subset of narrowly demonstrated effects.\u00a0 Unless we approach impact <em>literately*<\/em> and meaningfully<em>,\u00a0<\/em>we\u00a0will only ever firefight\u00a0paths towards\u00a0social effects.<br \/>\nIn all of this, it\u2019s crucial too that we don\u2019t\u00a0ignore the people.\u00a0 Obviously\u00a0it\u2019s vital that we\u00a0engage stakeholders\u00a0and consider wider public benefit, and there\u2019s excellent thought-leadership in these areas.\u00a0However\u00a0here I\u2019m referring to a different group \u2013 impact practitioners themselves, be they the academic driving their own work or a research manager supporting a broader programme of work.\u00a0 The impact sector has grown rapidly\u00a0within the UK, and \u2013 as demonstrated through the wealth of experience and expertise in the ARMA Impact\u00a0SIG \u2013 the sector would be foolish not to recognise the skills and capabilities so fundamental to translating research into effects.<br \/>\nReducing impact to a measured subset of effects obscures the\u00a0expertise needed for knowledge brokerage, culture change, partnership management, strategic planning and\u00a0reconfiguration and many other things in combination. \u00a0If we are to\u00a0create \u2018good impact\u2019 we need to\u00a0recognise and invest in professional development amongst all those supporting this agenda.\u00a0 And avoid bolting impact on as an afterthought. And understand how assessment models may drive behaviour. And how this may be\u00a0judged by a Mother-in-Law-dust-seeking review**.<br \/>\nLet\u2019s make the research count.\u00a0 Properly.<br \/>\n<em>*Impact literacy paper to come with the brilliant Dr David Phipps!!
