David Phipps a parl\u00e9 de l\u2019impact de la recherche \u00e0 l\u2019ext\u00e9rieur de l\u2019universit\u00e9 quand il est provoqu\u00e9 par des m\u00e9thodes actives de mobilisation des connaissances.<\/em><br \/>\nThe <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sspnet.org\/\">Society for Scholarly Publishing<\/a> (SSP), \u201cfounded in 1978, is a non-profit organization formed to promote and advance communication among all sectors of the scholarly publication community through networking, information dissemination, and facilitation of new developments in the field.\u201d For SSP impact is measured in bibliometrics. It was a pleasure to receive their invitation to participate on a panel in Vancouver on June 2, 2016 to push them beyond academic dissemination and get them thinking about methods \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.sspnet.org\/events\/annual-meeting-2016\/2016-schedule\/concurrent-3a-mobilizing-research\/\">beyond the PDF<\/a>\u201d.<br \/>\n<a href=\"https:\/\/researchimpact.ca\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/06\/SSP-160602-cover-image.jpg\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-8530\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-8530 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/researchimpact.ca\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/06\/SSP-160602-cover-image.jpg\" alt=\"Impact beyond dissemination\" width=\"650\" height=\"487\" \/><\/a><br \/>\nI was joined on the panel by Sarah Melton (@SVMelton, <a href=\"http:\/\/digitalscholarship.emory.edu\/index.html\">Emory Centre for Digital Scholarship<\/a>) speaking about digital humanities and demonstrating an app developed for public history. Ben Mudrak (@BenMudrak, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.researchsquare.com\/\">Research Square<\/a>) spoke about the production of videos to enhance the reach of scholarship and Melinda Kenneway (@MelindaKenneway, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.growkudos.com\/\">Kudos<\/a>) spoke about social media as tools to extend beyond scholarly dissemination. For creative dissemination methods impact is measured by reach metrics (views, downloads, social media analytics).<br \/>\nMy presentation (slides available <a href=\"http:\/\/www.slideshare.net\/KMbYork\/society-for-scholarly-publishing-160602\">here<\/a>) went beyond dissemination methods to speak about engaged methods of knowledge mobilization that create the conditions for impact beyond the academy. These impacts are measured by demonstrable changes in products, policy, practice and processes that benefit end users as told through narratives. The presentation ended with the question posed to the audience \u201cwhat is the role of scholarly publishing and publishers in the research impact agenda?\u201d<br \/>\nOne interesting comment back was \u201cWell unless we can make money doing it then we aren\u2019t going to do it\u201d. Melinda did a great job justifying the need for a new business model. My comment was that question is using an old business model to address a new paradigm. I suggested <a href=\"http:\/\/gizmodo.com\/betamax-vs-vhs-how-sony-lost-the-original-home-video-1591900374\">BetaMax<\/a> asked the same question of VHS. And, more analogous, the music industry asked the same question about <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Napster\">Napster<\/a>.<br \/>\nImpact is now a regular feature of every grant application in Canada as exemplified by the knowledge mobilization strategy and outcomes statements in all SSHRC applications. The Canadian Federation of Humanities and Social Sciences announced a project to articulate impacts in <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ideas-idees.ca\/blog\/measuring-impact-social-sciences-and-humanities\">October 2014<\/a>.\u00a0 In the UK impact is part of the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ref.ac.uk\">Research Excellence Framework<\/a> institutional assessment. In an environment where impact is becoming a regular part of academic scholarship and where funders such as <a href=\"http:\/\/www.cihr-irsc.gc.ca\/e\/32005.html\">CIHR, SSHRC and NSERC<\/a> are requiring publications to be open access, publishers have yet to figure out their role and land on a new business model where research is available beyond the academy to be engaged in knowledge mobilization efforts.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>This was the question posed at the Society for Scholarly Publishing in a session on knowledge mobilization.
