{"id":12079,"date":"2016-03-08T15:36:51","date_gmt":"2016-03-08T20:36:51","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/researchimpact.ydsinc.ca\/the-collaborative-process-behind-mcmasters-guide-to-collaboration\/"},"modified":"2021-11-23T16:59:23","modified_gmt":"2021-11-23T21:59:23","slug":"the-collaborative-process-behind-mcmasters-guide-to-collaboration","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/researchimpact.ca\/fr\/archive\/the-collaborative-process-behind-mcmasters-guide-to-collaboration\/","title":{"rendered":"The Collaborative Process Behind McMaster\u2019s Guide to Collaboration\u2026. \/ La d\u00e9marche collaborative derri\u00e8re le guide de McMaster sur la collaboration\u2026"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>One of the challenges for community members wishing to access university expertise is that it\u2019s hard to find the way in.\u00a0 \u201cThere\u2019s no front door,\u201d people tell us.<br \/>\nSo, in April 2015, a small group of collaborators from McMaster and the Social Planning and Research Council of Hamilton decided to create not so much a front door to McMaster University, but a map.\u00a0 Ideally, the map would help people find the kind of research collaboration they were looking for, and then negotiate the terms of that relationship once they\u2019d found it.\u00a0 The result was the just-released <em>Paths to Research Collaboration: a Guide to Working with McMaster Researchers<\/em>, online <a href=\"http:\/\/macconnector.mcmaster.ca\/docs\/default-source\/default-document-library\/paths-to-research-collaboration-%282015%29.pdf?sfvrsn=0\">here<\/a><em>.\u00a0 <\/em>In this blog post, we share with you some of our process, and highlights from our own collaborative experience.<br \/>\nPour les membres de la collectivit\u00e9 souhaitant profiter de l\u2019expertise qui fleurit dans l\u2019universit\u00e9, l\u2019une des difficult\u00e9s consiste \u00e0 savoir par o\u00f9 entrer. \u00ab\u2009C\u2019est comme s\u2019il n\u2019y avait pas de porte\u2009!\u2009\u00bb est une remarque qui revient souvent.<br \/>\nC\u2019est pourquoi, en avril\u00a02015, un petit groupe de collaborateurs de l\u2019Universit\u00e9 McMaster et le Conseil de la planification sociale et de la recherche (<em>Planning and Research Council<\/em>) de Hamilton ont d\u00e9cid\u00e9 non pas de percer une porte, mais plut\u00f4t de tracer une carte pour se retrouver dans l\u2019Universit\u00e9. Id\u00e9alement, cette carte devait aider les gens \u00e0 trouver le type de collaboration dont ils ont besoin en recherche, puis \u00e0 n\u00e9gocier les param\u00e8tres de la relation une fois qu\u2019ils l\u2019auraient trouv\u00e9e. Le r\u00e9sultat est la parution toute fraiche de <em>Paths to Research Collaboration: a Guide to Working with McMaster Researchers<\/em> (\u00ab\u2009Les chemins de la collaboration avec le milieu de la recherche, un guide pour travailler avec les chercheurs de l\u2019Universit\u00e9 McMaster\u2009\u00bb), disponible en ligne <a href=\"http:\/\/macconnector.mcmaster.ca\/docs\/default-source\/default-document-library\/paths-to-research-collaboration-%282015%29.pdf?sfvrsn=0\">ici<\/a><em>. <\/em>Dans ce billet, nous vous pr\u00e9sentons certaines de nos fa\u00e7ons de faire, de m\u00eame que les aspects les plus frappants de notre exp\u00e9rience collaborative.<br \/>\n<a href=\"https:\/\/researchimpact.ca\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/03\/Full_colour.jpg\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-8408\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-8408 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/researchimpact.ca\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/03\/Full_colour.jpg\" alt=\"Full_colour\" width=\"351\" height=\"194\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<blockquote><p>We began by pulling together a small group of people from local business and non-profit organizations who\u2019d previously collaborated with McMaster, with the single goal of figuring out what such a map should look like.\u00a0 To aid this process, we provided participants with guides produced by other universities, and invited everyone to identify what they liked and didn\u2019t like about each.\u00a0 Responses were sharp, critical, concise, thoughtful.\u00a0 Participants told us exactly what <em>not<\/em> to do, and gave us a good start on what to do better.\u00a0\u00a0 Thus began a 3-month process of drafting, re-connecting, revising, re-connecting, and revising again.\u00a0 It was a fantastic process, and a great example of what happens when creative and knowledgeable people put their heads together to do work that matters.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><strong><em>Ailsa Fullwood, Research Facilitator, Faculty of Social Sciences, McMaster University<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Working on this project brought to mind a famous quote by Margaret Mead: \u201cNever doubt that a small group of thoughtful, committed citizens can change the world; it\u2019s the only thing that ever has.\u201d\u00a0 Now, I don\u2019t know that we are going to change the world, but we made some small steps to help Hamiltonians and university researchers work together! That\u2019s a good thing! While we were taking those steps on our journey toward developing <em>Paths to Research Collaboration<\/em>, I was reminded that not only <em>what<\/em> we say but <em>how<\/em> we say it reflects our attitudes and assumptions. \u00a0I really looked forward to our meetings in the community and was excited about the toolkit we were creating <u>together<\/u>.\u00a0 I felt like a citizen of my city; collaborating with other citizens who happened to work either in the community or at the university. Building community-friendly research resources such as the guide for local providers will really help with making research accessible for a lot of folks.
