We bring outstanding researchers together with community partners to co-create knowledge for action \u2013knowledge that is mobilized to improve the social, cultural and economic well-being of communities throughout our region and around the globe. \u00a0Here\u2019s a look at some of our projects with community partners in 2014.<br \/>\n\u00c0 l\u2019Universit\u00e9 de Victoria, l\u2019unit\u00e9 Partenariats en recherche et Mobilisation des connaissances (Research Partnerships and Knowledge Mobilization unit, RPKM) est un portail ouvert aux gens du campus et de la communaut\u00e9, destin\u00e9 \u00e0 soutenir et \u00e0 renforcer la recherche transformatrice. Nous r\u00e9unissons des chercheurs exceptionnels et des partenaires de la communaut\u00e9 afin qu\u2019ils cr\u00e9ent ensemble un savoir en action \u2013 un savoir mobilis\u00e9 dans le but d\u2019am\u00e9liorer le bien-\u00eatre social, culturel et \u00e9conomique des collectivit\u00e9s de notre r\u00e9gion et du monde entier. Voici quelques-uns des projets en cours en\u00a02014.<br \/>\n<figure id=\"attachment_8311\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-8311\" style=\"width: 675px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/researchimpact.ca\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/12\/UVic-grad-student-Catherine-Orr.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-8311 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/researchimpact.ca\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/12\/UVic-grad-student-Catherine-Orr.jpg\" alt=\"UVic grad student Catherine Orr\" width=\"675\" height=\"372\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-8311\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Graduate student Catherine Orr working with students during construction of the rain garden at Oak &amp; Orca Bioregional School<\/figcaption><\/figure><br \/>\n<strong>UVic researcher answers the city\u2019s call for rainwater management solutions.<\/strong><br \/>\nWith Victoria\u2019s changing climate of wetter winters and more frequent, more intense storms, rain gardens will play an increasingly important role in keeping our water clean and managing the flow of rain in our community. For this reason, the City of Victoria has partnered with environmental studies master\u2019s student Catherine Orr to find better ways of managing our city\u2019s rainwater.<br \/>\nWorking under the supervision of Dr. Valentin Schaefer in UVic\u2019s Department of Environmental Studies, Orr has constructed a rain garden on the campus of Victoria\u2019s Oak and Orca Bioregional School.<br \/>\nThe rainwater system runs nearly the entire length of the school site and is designed to manage the majority of rain that falls during the year, using gravity to collect water on the roof and disperse it through an educational play feature into a native plant rain garden.<br \/>\nIn addition to the City of Victoria, this research was supported by several other community organizations. The Real Estate Foundation, Vancity, and Mitacs helped fund the construction of the site, while the Capital Regional District donated soil and plants and Murdoch De Greeff Inc.\u2019s landscape architects provided professional design input.<br \/>\nOrr\u2019s research will lead to new knowledge of rain garden systems that will help the city develop improved rainwater guidelines and eventually construct more rain gardens in other locations, providing a healthier, more sustainable alternative to the city\u2019s storm drains. \u201cWe need to treat rainwater better in cities,\u201d says Orr. \u201cWe have this \u2018out of sight, out of mind\u2019 attitude towards rainwater\u2026 [but] the city is a place where natural systems don\u2019t stop happening.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>At the University of Victoria, the Research Partnerships and Knowledge Mobilization unit (RPKM) is a campus and community-wide portal to support the development of transformative research.
