Inspired by the 500 years history of the building and its library as well as some helpful hints from Google on the practice of medicine over the years, Tabitha listened for two days and presented this poem at the wrap up of the Forum. We are pleased to publish this poem with her permission.\u00a0<\/em><br \/>\n<em>Tabitha McGowan \u00e9tait po\u00e8te en r\u00e9sidence au Royal College of Physicians d\u2019\u00c9dimbourg pendant le Forum sur la mobilisation des connaissances du Royaume-Uni de\u00a02015. Lors de la cl\u00f4ture du Forum, elle a pr\u00e9sent\u00e9 ce po\u00e8me, que nous publions ici avec sa permission.\u00a0 \u00a0<\/em><br \/>\n&nbsp;<br \/>\n<figure id=\"attachment_8140\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-8140\" style=\"width: 546px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/researchimpact.ca\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/07\/Royal-College-of-Edinburgh.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-8140 \" src=\"https:\/\/researchimpact.ca\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/07\/Royal-College-of-Edinburgh-1024x765.jpg\" alt=\"Royal College of Physicians, Edinburgh\" width=\"546\" height=\"407\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-8140\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Royal College of Physicians, Edinburgh<\/figcaption><\/figure><br \/>\n<strong>All Knowledge is Mobile: Royal College of Physicians, 2015<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>Tabitha McGowan\u00a0<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>1700<\/strong><br \/>\nWe know so much.<br \/>\nWe know that miasma makes malaria,<br \/>\nThat plagues are a punishment,<br \/>\nThat an ill-humoured gentleman may be cured of his affliction by application of leeches and letting of blood,<br \/>\nAnd women should be watched for signs of Too Much Knowing as there is a fine line between learning and devilment.<br \/>\nSo if in doubt, incinerate.<br \/>\nWe know that we know as much as there is to know.<br \/>\n<strong>1800<\/strong><br \/>\nWe know so much.<br \/>\nWe know that pustulent matter can prevent the pox,<br \/>\nThat all cures can be found between alcohol and opium,<br \/>\nThat scurvy can be broadsided by ingestion of limes,<br \/>\nAnd that knowledge should be captured and kept safe from the grasping hands of The Wrong Sort.<br \/>\nSo if in doubt, isolate.<br \/>\nWe know that there are <em>others<\/em> who know things we know to be false.<br \/>\nBut we know that we know as much as we can know.<br \/>\n<strong>1900<\/strong><br \/>\nWe know so much.<br \/>\nWe know that Knowledge is best owned and maintained by bewhiskered white men, for the good of the benighted masses,<br \/>\nThat we can sanitise the human race,<br \/>\nThat cocaine will cure your baby\u2019s toothache,<br \/>\nAnd that hysteria can be fixed with good vibrations.<br \/>\nBut if in doubt, incarcerate.<br \/>\nNow we know that we know more than we knew.<br \/>\n<strong>2000<\/strong><br \/>\nWe know so much.<br \/>\nWe know that the mind can be unwrapped and mapped and if antibiotics can fix the physical, lobotomies can fix the mental,<br \/>\nThat as one disease is dealt with another will take its place,<br \/>\nThat there is a need for breeding to weed out the weak,<br \/>\nAnd if in doubt, eliminate.<br \/>\nWe know we should know better.<br \/>\n<strong>Today<\/strong><br \/>\nWe know so little.<br \/>\nBut we know that facts can act as traps for the mind,<br \/>\nThat what we know today can be blown away with tomorrow\u2019s news.<br \/>\nToday we sit under the gaze of the thinkers of their age, each convinced of the rightness of his universe,<br \/>\nEven as it shifted beneath his feet.<br \/>\nBut if we know we know a little, each of us can throw our tiny fragments of imperfect wisdom into the crucible.<br \/>\nAnd if in doubt, collaborate.<br \/>\nWe know the way.<br \/>\n&nbsp;<br \/>\n<strong>About\u00a0Tabitha<\/strong><br \/>\nTabitha McGowan is a writer of dark romantic fiction. She lives in the north east of England with a long-suffering husband and a surprisingly tolerant teenage daughter, as well as a small menagerie that currently includes three dogs, four cats, two ferrets, and a rabbit that\u2019s allergic to being a rabbit. She has written professionally since graduating from university with a degree in Theatre Studies, and has worked as a scriptwriter for a theatre company, a writer-in-residence for the National Railway Museum and a copywriter.\u00a0 She\u2019s also a qualified teacher, and sings in a folk\/acoustic band when not hunched, cursing loudly, over her laptop keyboard with a quadruple gin and tonic at her side.\u00a0 Her hobbies include fire-breathing (yes, really\u2026), and being a feminazi intent on destroying civilisation as we know it.<br \/>\nHer first novel, The Tied Man, was released in January 2013, and has been delighting\/shocking\/sickening readers (usually at the same time) ever since; she\u2019s now working on \u2018Unbound\u2019, a sequel to The Tied Man, as well as planning the adventures \u2013 romantic and otherwise \u2013 \u00a0of the rather beautiful Immanuil and Tolly from her short story, \u2018Healing\u2019.<br \/>\nShe can regularly be found on Facebook and Twitter (<a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/Tabitha_McGowan\">@Tabitha_McGowan<\/a>), usually procrastinating wildly and providing links to cats doing amusing things, and blogs about her writing on Goodreads.<br \/>\n&nbsp;<br \/>\n&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Tabitha McGowan was the poet in residence at the UK Knowledge Mobilization Forum 2015 in at the Royal College of Physicians of Edinburgh.
