That post was based on the often cited barrier of lack of\u00a0incentives and rewards for community campus collaborations. In the university system faculty\u00a0are assessed on their teaching, research and service usually with a 40%, 40%, 20% weighting.<br \/>\nIn\u00a0many institutions the only service that is assessed is service to the scholarly community (serving\u00a0on university committees for example) although this isn\u2019t the case in all universities. Many\u00a0activities that promote community campus collaborations are therefore not counted in tenure\u00a0and promotion decisions. Activities such as sitting on agency boards or committees, building\u00a0community capacity for research or making a presentation to community agencies are necessary\u00a0to support engaged scholarship but are not given the same weight as sitting on university\u00a0committees, teaching students and presenting a paper at a scholarly conference.<br \/>\nTo be sure, there are successful faculty who have obtained tenure based on a portfolio of engaged\u00a0scholarship but this pressure is most keenly felt by new, untenured faculty members who have\u00a0up to seven years to establish their scholarly career and obtain tenure. Teaching and research is\u00a0not a zero sum game\u2026they complement each other. Traditional and engaged scholarship can\u00a0also be complementary as shown by engaged scholars who have achieved tenure. What is a zero\u00a0sum game is time. It takes time to nurture research partners and create sustainable, authentic and\u00a0equitable partnerships. That is time spent not doing something else\u2026sometimes at the expense of\u00a0family life instead of scholarly achievement.<br \/>\n<strong>But what about incentives and rewards for community members collaborating on research\u00a0projects with university or other community partners? <\/strong><br \/>\nI read much less on this likely because\u00a0community partners are too busy collaborating and aren\u2019t measured on their publications so they\u00a0don\u2019t have the same imperative to publish. I also lament publicly about academics that work with\u00a0community partners, extol the virtues of community campus collaborations yet fail to publish\u00a0with their community partners as co-authors. If you aren\u2019t publishing with your partners then you\u00a0fall short of having truly authentic partnerships.<br \/>\n<strong>Why do community partners engage in collaborative research?<\/strong><br \/>\nIn my 7 years\u2019 experience on\u00a0the United Way York Region (UWYR) Community <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright wp-image-758 size-medium\" src=\"http:\/\/ckx.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/08\/%E2%80%9CCommunity-research-is-a-mile-wide-and-1-300x300.png\" alt=\"&quot;Community research is a mile wide and an inch deep while academic research is an inch wide and a mile deep&quot; David Phipps\" width=\"300\" height=\"300\" \/>Engagement and Research Committee I\u00a0have come to appreciate the different nature of research undertaken by my UWYR colleagues. \u00a0If pressed to describe the differences in a concise manner (and in so doing make sweeping\u00a0generalizations) I would say <em>community research is a mile wide and an inch deep while\u00a0academic research is an inch wide and a mile deep<\/em>. Academics will take a closer and closer look\u00a0at very specific questions seeking to maximize academic impact and answer the question \u201cwhy\u201d.<br \/>\nCommunity research is more instrumental seeking to provide answers to maximize operational\u00a0impact and answer the question \u201cwhat\u201d. This complementarity is why community-campus\u00a0collaboration magic happens when we get it right.<br \/>\nApologies to all those differences I have just white washed over with my intentionally broad\u00a0brush strokes. Certainly there are excellent examples of scholarly research arising from\u00a0community organizations such as the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.communitybasedresearch.ca\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Centre for Community Based Research<\/a> and the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.wellesleyinstitute.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Wellesley\u00a0Institute<\/a>.\u00a0The incentives for community research seem to be operational effectiveness and providing\u00a0maximum impact for constrained service delivery budgets. The rewards are likely less tangible\u00a0and include service to community and the sense that their roles make a difference. \u00a0And here I am guessing what community feels. I know better than to represent the views of\u00a0community from my position in the university.<br \/>\n<strong>That is why this post is just the start of the\u00a0conversation. <\/strong><br \/>\nOn November 19-21 in Toronto CKX will create a venue for exploring these\u00a0issues. A group of 10\u00a0universities and Community Campus Partnerships for Health are collaborating to explore the\u00a0issues related to community engaged scholarship. They will be presenting a report at workshop\u00a0on October 6 in advance of the Engaged Scholarship Consortium 2014 annual meeting in\u00a0Edmonton October 7-9. CCPH also sponsors CES4Health that has a full suite of peer review\u00a0mechanisms for products arising from engaged scholarship.
