Comme l\u2019a dit Marshall McLuhen, \u00ab le m\u00e9dium est le message \u00bb.<\/em><br \/>\nDavid sat on the dock.\u00a0 It was a sunny day on Beaver Lake in Ontario\u2019s <a href=\"http:\/\/www.explorekawarthalakes.com\/en\/index.asp\">Kawartha Lakes<\/a> region. White wine in hand and friends all around, he watched Gary <a href=\"http:\/\/researchimpact.files.wordpress.com\/2011\/08\/lm-cottage-028.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-3883\" title=\"L&amp;M cottage 028\" src=\"http:\/\/researchimpact.files.wordpress.com\/2011\/08\/lm-cottage-028.jpg?w=300\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" \/><\/a>(@KMbeing) play with their 8 year old niece, Maddie (ok, she\u2019s not a niece by blood but a niece by love, nonetheless).\u00a0 Maddie wanted to build a sandcastle, which for her meant that she would tell Gary where to put the walls and turrets and keep engaged just long enough to get it half completed. Gary was playing. And David thought, \u201cWhen was the last time I just played\u201d?<br \/>\nDavid played with Maddie\u2019s brother Alex a few months ago when they built Leggo things but he felt regret that he couldn\u2019t remember the last time he played.\u00a0 Just played.\u00a0 Without kids. He thought of asking friends:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>When was the last time you went to a play ground, or a water park or just played?<\/li>\n<li>When was the last time you played in anything other than grown up organized sports or fitness classes?<\/li>\n<li>When was the last time you just explored your own imagination and just played?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>But he suspected that his friends would all be as constrained as he felt about playing.\u00a0 He wanted to play and act like a kid but he always found excuses about being too busy. The real excuse is he doesn\u2019t\u2019 want other adults (or kids for that matter) to wonder why is this grown up is playing and not acting like he <em>should<\/em>.<br \/>\nDavid is also a knowledge broker who works at York University\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/researchimpact.ca\/home\/index.html\">Knowledge Mobilization Unit<\/a>.\u00a0 He needed to make a decision about playing so he explored the evidence on play and other child like freedoms. He asked the 21<sup>st<\/sup> Century oracle, Google, and found lots of references to play and research but mostly from a child\u2019s developmental perspective.\u00a0 Google returned less about research on adult play but one <a href=\"http:\/\/thecreativitycompany.se\/?p=1\">study<\/a>by Samuel West explained that \u201cAdult play is a facilitator of creativity in an organizational context\u201d. David thought about this and realized that if adult play is important to success in work (and likely in life as well) why didn\u2019t grownups play more often?<br \/>\nDavid asked Gary, \u201cYou remember when you were playing with Maddie?\u201d<br \/>\n\u201cYeah\u201d, he answered, without looking up from his TweetDeck.<!--more--><br \/>\n\u201cWell\u201d, David continued, \u201cwhat else can grownups do to act more like children and still benefit their personal and professional lives?\u201d<br \/>\nRecalling a time when they went to a playground about 2 years ago to just play, Gary looked up and cautioned, \u201cBe careful when sliding as you can lose your wallet that way, but I know that\u2019s not what you\u2019re looking for.\u201d<br \/>\nDavid chuckled as he realized kids never lost wallets when they played.\u00a0 That was a uniquely adult risk of playing. Gary added, \u201cAdults write lots but they don\u2019t tell stories.\u00a0 Is that something kids can do that would help adults let go of their constructed constraints?\u201d<br \/>\nAn interesting idea. David pondered, \u201cI wonder what would happen if we actually told stories as a complement to all the tweets, blogs, reports, academic papers, book chapters and, ugh, e mail grownups produce on a daily basis?\u201d David had <a href=\"..\/2011\/03\/03\/beyond-peer-review\/\">blogged<\/a> about theatre as a means of research dissemination so he was already starting to think differently. David also remembered two things about story telling.\u00a0 He recalled that his colleague, Linda Hawkins (from the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.theresearchshop.ca\/\">Institute for Community Engaged Scholarship<\/a> at the University of Guelph) used story telling as a method to convey research findings to a workshop at the Community-University Expo 2011. The title of her story was \u201cLearning to fit: a story about the City of Guelph and the Research Shop\u201d and the abstract was posted <a href=\"http:\/\/www.cuexpo2011.ca\/res\/pub\/docs\/Elearning_459.pdf\">on line<\/a>. In an e mail Linda told David that storytelling was an acceptable method of research dissemination for the community sector. David had also read Alex Bennet\u2019s <a href=\"http:\/\/www.mountainquestinstitute.com\/knowledge_mobilization.htm\">book<\/a>, <em>Knowledge Mobilization in the Social Sciences and Humanities: moving from research to action<\/em>. In the book she says one aspect of knowledge mobilization is like a \u201cPow-Wow, an exchange of knowledge through story and music named after the Native American gathering involving dance, music and socializing\u201d.<br \/>\n<a href=\"http:\/\/researchimpact.files.wordpress.com\/2011\/08\/ices-logo.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-3884\" title=\"ICES logo\" src=\"http:\/\/researchimpact.files.wordpress.com\/2011\/08\/ices-logo.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"655\" height=\"64\" \/><\/a><br \/>\n\u201cA Pow-Wow and Linda\u2019s story about her partnership with the City of Guelph are great examples of how to tell a research story,\u201d David thought but he also recalled a tweet about story telling.\u00a0 The tweet linked to a research paper by <a href=\"http:\/\/education.uregina.ca\/index.php?q=faculty.html&amp;type=faculty&amp;uid=36\">Patrick Lewis<\/a> titled \u201cStorytelling as Research\/Research as Storytelling\u201d. Patrick published this paper in a journal called \u201cQualitative Inquiry\u201d.\u00a0 The paper was published in 2011, in volume 17, number 6. It started on page 505 and ended on page 510. David found the paper pretty heavy with words like Kierkegaardian. While on a bus to see friends in Waterloo, Ontario, David turned to Gary and said, \u201cPlease read this and tell me what it\u2019s all about\u201d.<br \/>\n<a href=\"http:\/\/researchimpact.files.wordpress.com\/2011\/08\/schneiders-sign1.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-thumbnail wp-image-3886\" title=\"Schneider's sign\" src=\"http:\/\/researchimpact.files.wordpress.com\/2011\/08\/schneiders-sign1.jpg?w=128\" alt=\"\" width=\"128\" height=\"150\" \/><\/a>Twenty minutes later Gary summed it up. \u201cThis paper talks about the interplay between research and storytelling and how each informed and supported the other. You should try telling a story about knowledge mobilization. It might help you break out of your traditional academic structures like building a sandcastle with Maddie helped me be creative\u201d.<br \/>\nAll he could respond was, \u201cHmmmm\u201d as he thought about the idea and watched the big Schneider\u2019s sign go by near Aberfoyle, Ontario. So, two days later David sat down to write a story.\u00a0 He wrote a story about trying to tell a story. \u00a0It\u2019s not a blog.\u00a0 It\u2019s not a research paper.\u00a0 It\u2019s a story where the medium is the message. It\u2019s a\u2026<br \/>\n\u201cLunch is ready!\u201d yelled Gary, interrupting his thought. And off he went.
