Two funding announcements will move university research into communities.<\/em><br \/>\n<em>L&rsquo;Universit\u00e9 York et United Way de la r\u00e9gion de York examinent les liens entre les conditions de vie et la sant\u00e9.\u00a0 L&rsquo;annonce du financement de deux projets va permettre \u00e0 la recherche universitaire de rejoindre les communaut\u00e9s<\/em><br \/>\nFirst <a title=\"posted\" href=\"http:\/\/news.yorku.ca\/2011\/06\/15\/york-university-and-united-way-of-york-region-examine-link-between-living-conditions-and-health\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">posted<\/a> by York University.<br \/>\n<strong>T<\/strong><strong>ORONTO, June 15, 2011 \u2212<\/strong>If where you\u2019re born, live and work \u2212 and the healthcare system you access \u2212 determines a lot about how healthy you\u2019ll be, what can local governments and community agencies do to improve your well-being?<br \/>\nThe <strong>Canadian Institutes of Health Research (CIHR)<\/strong> has awarded York University and the United Way of York Region $93,000 to develop research initiatives that will examine how living conditions \u2212 the social determinants of health \u2212 affect health.<a href=\"http:\/\/researchimpact.files.wordpress.com\/2011\/06\/cihr-logo.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-thumbnail wp-image-3727\" title=\"CIHR logo\" src=\"http:\/\/researchimpact.files.wordpress.com\/2011\/06\/cihr-logo.jpg?w=150\" alt=\"\" width=\"150\" height=\"136\" \/><\/a><br \/>\nThe funding, being announced today at York University\u2019s fifth annual Knowledge Mobilization Expo at the Markham Convergence Centre, will be used for projects that will draw on the university\u2019s strong interdisciplinary health research to respond to community needs and systemic social challenges identified by United Way of York Region.<br \/>\n\u201cSocial determinants of health are experienced where Canadians live \u2212 right in their communities,\u201d said Ian Graham, vice-president of Knowledge Translation at CIHR. \u201cUniversity researchers and their partners in community health agencies, including those supported by the United Way, are critical to developing novel health services and health policies that have a direct outcome on the health of Canadians.\u201d<br \/>\n<a href=\"http:\/\/researchimpact.files.wordpress.com\/2011\/06\/shapson_stan_1.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-3729\" title=\"Shapson_Stan_1\" src=\"http:\/\/researchimpact.files.wordpress.com\/2011\/06\/shapson_stan_1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"100\" height=\"133\" \/><\/a><br \/>\n\u201cCollaborating and making research more accessible to our community partners and co-developing knowledge is a cornerstone of York University\u2019s research enterprise,\u201d said Stan Shapson, vice-president Research &amp; Innovation. \u201cFor the last five years, we have collaborated with the United Way of York Region to connect researchers and graduate students with community and government organizations to find novel approaches that impact health and human services. York\u2019s faculty members and our partners in community health agencies continue to work together to create innovative solutions that benefit the quality of life in our community.\u201d<br \/>\n<strong>United Way of York Region<\/strong> is also announcing funding during the Knowledge Mobilization Expo. It is committing $150,000 through Change Inc., a social innovation incubator that it developed with York University to invest in new solutions to persistent social and health challenges faced by York Region residents. Based <a href=\"http:\/\/researchimpact.files.wordpress.com\/2011\/06\/uwyr-logo.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-3728\" title=\"UWYR logo\" src=\"http:\/\/researchimpact.files.wordpress.com\/2011\/06\/uwyr-logo.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"112\" height=\"74\" \/><\/a>at the university\u2019s research offices in York Region, Change Inc. was <a href=\"http:\/\/research.news.yorku.ca\/2010\/10\/06\/united-way-and-york-university-launch-change-inc-to-address-complex-social-issuesin-york-region\/\">launched in October 2010<\/a>. The United Way funding, through its <a href=\"http:\/\/www.uwyr.on.ca\/strength-investments\/\">Strength Investments<\/a> will allow Change Inc. to provide socially-focused entrepreneurs, organizations and collaboratives with seed funding, physical space, shared administrative services and access to mentors, York researchers and graduate students.<!--more--><br \/>\n\u201cBy allowing social innovations to start early, Change Inc. helps them to either fail fast or succeed quickly, allowing the innovation to scale across the Region,\u201d said Regional Councillor John Taylor. \u201cYork Region has all the elements needed to support social innovation: a research university, a change catalyst in United Way, a well-organized community sector, businesses who care about their employees as much as their products, innovative hospitals, and Regional and municipal governments investing in health and human services. This innovation ecosystem will allow York Region to fill a gap in Canada\u2019s innovation agenda.\u201d<br \/>\nUnited Way of York Region\u2019s Strength Investments is an example of this innovation, providing seed funding to build civic muscle.\u00a0 Strength Investments bring community, faith, business and agencies together to work on simple, collaborative and innovative solutions. The funding, which arose through research undertaken by three York University graduate students in the summer of 2010, represents a new way for the United Way to support the rich, informal network of caring and innovation that already exists across the region.<br \/>\n\u201cGraduate student research was instrumental in undertaking neighbourhood level data collection and analysis that allowed us to develop an effective program,\u201d says Daniele Zanotti, CEO, United Way of York Region. \u201cIt provided a framework for United Way of York Region to commit $150,000 to Strength Investments, which currently supports six separate projects.\u201d<br \/>\n<em>York<\/em><em> University is the leading interdisciplinary research and teaching university in Canada.
