But we have yet to feature mirth, whimsy, and jocularity\u2026 sorry, humour\u2026 about clear language.  Until now.<br \/>\nThis is at least third hand.  I saw it on a plain language listserv (yes, there&rsquo;s a listserv for everything &#8211; see below for more information).  The person posting it on the listserv saw it on a blog <a href=\"http:\/\/sprachgefuhl.blogspot.com\/2010\/09\/so-you-think-english-is-easy.html\">here<\/a>, where it was posted from a chain email.  I have no idea where it started.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>The bandage was wound around the wound.<br \/>\nThe farm was used to produce produce.<br \/>\nThe dump was so full that it had to refuse more refuse.<br \/>\nWe must polish the Polish furniture.<br \/>\nHe could lead if he would get the lead out.<br \/>\nThe soldier decided to desert his dessert in the desert.<br \/>\nSince there is no time like the present, he thought it was time to present the present.<br \/>\nA bass was painted on the head of the bass drum.<br \/>\nWhen shot at, the dove dove into the bushes.<br \/>\nI did not object to the object.<br \/>\nThe insurance for the invalid was invalid.<br \/>\nThere was a row among the oarsmen about how to row.<br \/>\nThey were too close to the door to close it.<br \/>\nThe buck does funny things when the does are present.<br \/>\n<a href=\"http:\/\/researchimpact.files.wordpress.com\/2010\/09\/laughing-guy-thumb1680751.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-2563\" title=\"Laughing Guy\" src=\"http:\/\/researchimpact.files.wordpress.com\/2010\/09\/laughing-guy-thumb1680751.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"137\" height=\"162\" \/><\/a>A seamstress and a sewer fell down into a sewer line.<br \/>\nTo help with planting, the farmer taught his sow to sow.<br \/>\nThe wind was too strong to wind the sail.<br \/>\nUpon seeing the tear in the painting I shed a tear.<br \/>\nI had to subject the subject to a series of tests.<br \/>\nHow can I intimate this to my most intimate friend?<br \/>\nLet&rsquo;s face it-English is a crazy language. There is no \u00ab\u00a0egg\u00a0\u00bb in \u00ab\u00a0eggplant,\u00a0\u00bb nor \u00ab\u00a0ham\u00a0\u00bb in \u00ab\u00a0hamburger\u00a0\u00bb; neither \u00ab\u00a0apple\u00a0\u00bb nor \u00ab\u00a0pine\u00a0\u00bb in \u00ab\u00a0pineapple.\u00a0\u00bb \u00ab\u00a0English muffins\u00a0\u00bb weren&rsquo;t invented in England or French fries in France. \u00ab\u00a0Sweetmeats\u00a0\u00bb are candies while \u00ab\u00a0sweetbreads,\u00a0\u00bb which aren&rsquo;t sweet, are meat. We take English for granted. But if we explore its paradoxes, we find that \u00ab\u00a0quicksand\u00a0\u00bb can work slowly, \u00ab\u00a0boxing rings\u00a0\u00bb are square and a \u00ab\u00a0guinea pig\u00a0\u00bb is neither from Guinea nor is it a pig.<br \/>\nAnd why is it that writers \u00ab\u00a0write\u00a0\u00bb but fingers don&rsquo;t \u00ab\u00a0fing,\u00a0\u00bb grocers don&rsquo;t \u00ab\u00a0groce\u00a0\u00bb and hammers don&rsquo;t \u00ab\u00a0ham\u00a0\u00bb? If the plural of \u00ab\u00a0tooth\u00a0\u00bb is \u00ab\u00a0teeth,\u00a0\u00bb why isn&rsquo;t the plural of \u00ab\u00a0booth,\u00a0\u00bb \u00ab\u00a0beeth\u00a0\u00bb? One \u00ab\u00a0goose,\u00a0\u00bb two \u00ab\u00a0geese.\u00a0\u00bb So one \u00ab\u00a0moose,\u00a0\u00bb two \u00ab\u00a0meese\u00a0\u00bb? One \u00ab\u00a0index,\u00a0\u00bb two \u00ab\u00a0indices\u00a0\u00bb? Doesn&rsquo;t it seem crazy that you can \u00ab\u00a0make amends\u00a0\u00bb but not one \u00ab\u00a0amend\u00a0\u00bb? If you have a bunch of \u00ab\u00a0odds and ends\u00a0\u00bb and get rid of all but one of them, what do you call it?<br \/>\nIf teachers \u00ab\u00a0taught,\u00a0\u00bb why didn&rsquo;t preachers \u00ab\u00a0praught\u00a0\u00bb? If a \u00ab\u00a0vegetarian\u00a0\u00bb eats vegetables, what does a \u00ab\u00a0humanitarian\u00a0\u00bb eat? Sometimes I think all the English speakers should be committed to an asylum for the verbally insane. In what language do people \u00ab\u00a0recite at a play\u00a0\u00bb and \u00ab\u00a0play at a recital\u00a0\u00bb? \u00ab\u00a0Ship by truck\u00a0\u00bb and \u00ab\u00a0send cargo by ship\u00a0\u00bb? \u00ab\u00a0Have noses that run\u00a0\u00bb and \u00ab\u00a0feet that smell\u00a0\u00bb?<br \/>\nHow can a \u00ab\u00a0slim chance\u00a0\u00bb and a \u00ab\u00a0fat chance\u00a0\u00bb be the same, while a \u00ab\u00a0wise man\u00a0\u00bb and a \u00ab\u00a0wise guy\u00a0\u00bb are opposites? You have to marvel at the unique lunacy of a language in which your house can \u00ab\u00a0burn up\u00a0\u00bb as it \u00ab\u00a0burns down,\u00a0\u00bb in which you \u00ab\u00a0fill in a form\u00a0\u00bb by \u00ab\u00a0filling it out\u00a0\u00bb and in which an alarm \u00ab\u00a0goes off\u00a0\u00bb by \u00ab\u00a0going on.\u00a0\u00bb<br \/>\nEnglish was invented by people, not computers, and it reflects the creativity of the human race, which, of course, is not a race at all. That is why, when the stars are out, they are visible, but when the lights are out, they are invisible.<br \/>\nP.S.
