You were likely reading our <a href=\"http:\/\/researchimpact.wordpress.com\/2009\/07\/13\/the-power-of-social-networking-knowledge-brokers-broker-knowledge-about-knowledge-brokers\/\">story on the work of Sarah Michaels<\/a> where we reflected on the convergent evolution of knowledge brokering in environmental policy and in our practice at ResearchImpact-R\u00e9seauImpactRecherche.<br \/>\n<a href=\"http:\/\/researchimpact.files.wordpress.com\/2010\/07\/york-ec.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-2249\" style=\"margin:5px;\" title=\"York-EC\" src=\"http:\/\/researchimpact.files.wordpress.com\/2010\/07\/york-ec.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"153\" height=\"153\" \/><\/a>Well, it\u2019s happened again, and this time we didn\u2019t have to go to Nebraska to find it.\u00a0 We found the Science &amp; Technology Liaison Division of Environment Canada in Burlington, in our own back yard.\u00a0 York\u2019s KMb Unit packed up and went on a road trip!\u00a0 Despite the easy directions we still managed to get lost but thanks to Burlington\/Hamilton native <a href=\"http:\/\/researchimpact.wordpress.com\/2008\/07\/18\/meet-a-mobilizer-michael-johnny-york-university\/\">Michael Johnny<\/a> we found our way to meet with the S&amp;T Liaison Branch who have been pioneers in knowledge transfer\/knowledge brokering since 2002.<br \/>\n<a href=\"http:\/\/researchimpact.files.wordpress.com\/2010\/07\/cciw-from-the-water.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-2250\" title=\"CCIW from the water\" src=\"http:\/\/researchimpact.files.wordpress.com\/2010\/07\/cciw-from-the-water.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"200\" height=\"150\" \/><\/a>The S&amp;T Division is housed at the National Water Research Institute (NWRI), part of Environment Canada\u2019s Water Science and Technology Directorate (WSTD) which is Canada&rsquo;s largest freshwater research facility. \u201cEnvironment Canada\u2019s S&amp;T Liaison Division is a knowledge translation and knowledge brokering unit.\u00a0 S&amp;T Liaison focuses on customizing and targeting science knowledge to the user audience to help improve uptake and utility, and on the development of mechanisms for sustained interaction between science and policy\/program.\u00a0 This focus ensures not only the push of knowledge to the correct science user, but also allows the user to inform the research agenda (policy pull).\u201d<br \/>\nThis philosophy will sound familiar to loyal readers of Mobilize This!\u00a0 But wait, there\u2019s more.<br \/>\n\u201cClose engagement between researchers and research users, from the planning phase through to the communication of research, is essential if research is intended to inform policy making and regulation.\u201d<br \/>\nIt\u2019s like we\u2019re KMb twins separated at birth.<br \/>\n<a href=\"http:\/\/researchimpact.files.wordpress.com\/2010\/07\/alex-bielak.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-2251\" title=\"Alex Bielak\" src=\"http:\/\/researchimpact.files.wordpress.com\/2010\/07\/alex-bielak.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"173\" height=\"130\" \/><\/a>From a series of Science-Policy workshops starting in 2002 to an<a href=\"http:\/\/www.ec.gc.ca\/scitech\/default.asp?lang=En&amp;n=9D4E3F0C-1\"> expertise database<\/a> to a series of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ec.gc.ca\/scitech\/default.asp?lang=En&amp;n=4B40916E-0\">S&amp;T into Action stories<\/a> to <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ec.gc.ca\/scitech\/default.asp?lang=En&amp;n=DBB82193-1\">RSS feeds<\/a> of the latest Environment Canada research and knowledge products the S&amp;T Liaison Division is using similar tools as ResearchImpact-R\u00e9seauImpactRecherche to achieve similar goals.\u00a0 <a href=\"http:\/\/researchimpact.files.wordpress.com\/2010\/07\/djp.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-2252\" title=\"David Phipps \" src=\"http:\/\/researchimpact.files.wordpress.com\/2010\/07\/djp.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"173\" height=\"130\" \/><\/a>And we share another feature in common.\u00a0 The leads at S&amp;T Liaison Division, <a href=\"http:\/\/web.mac.com\/peterlevesque\/Knowledge_Mobilization\/Blog\/Entries\/2010\/3\/25_Knowledge_Broker_Stories%3A_From_Science_to_Science_Communication_to_Knowledge_Brokering.html\">Alex Bielak<\/a> and York\u2019s KMb Unit, <a href=\"http:\/\/web.mac.com\/peterlevesque\/Knowledge_Mobilization\/Blog\/Entries\/2009\/10\/24_Knowledge_Broker_Stories%3A_How_to_go_from_broke_to_broker_in_17_short_years.html\">David Phipps<\/a> have both told their stories on Peter Levesque\u2019s KMb Blog.\u00a0 You can also <a href=\"http:\/\/www.itsmyday-cestmajournee.gc.ca\/0309\/profiles-profils-eng\/bielak_alex.asp\">read more about Alex<\/a> in \u201cIt\u2019s My Day\u201d, Canada\u2019s Public Service eMagazine.<br \/>\nTo paraphrase their own work, Alex and his colleagues help tell the story of how Environment Canada\u2019s research generates tangible environmental, social and economic benefits.\u00a0 Their research impact<a href=\"#_ftn1\">[1]<\/a> studies demonstrate how science &amp;
