We were pleased to welcome over 95 participants to examine how KM can help broker relationships over, under, around and through Boundaries: between research and practice\/policy; between community and university; between research and partner.<br \/>\nOne always surprising and satisfying session is the un-conference time where participants identify topics of interest, including evaluation, training for KM careers, what is\/are knowledge(s), changing the university culture, and social media. Danielle Zanotti (CEO, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.uwyr.on.ca\/\">United Way of York Region<\/a>) is always entertaining and thoughtful as he compared York\u2019s KM Unit to his Nona (grandmother) who was strategic in her choice of partner \u2013 his Nono (grandfather). Tim McConnell (President and CEO, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.mcconnellfoundation.ca\/\">McConnell Foundation<\/a>) reflected that putting voices around a table who wouldn\u2019t normally sit together creates a clash of different understandings that creates new knowledge. He also recognized that policy makers (provincial and federal) where mainly absent from our KM table.<br \/>\n<a href=\"http:\/\/researchimpact.files.wordpress.com\/2010\/03\/tim_brodhead2.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-1614\" style=\"margin:5px;\" title=\"Tim Brodhead\" src=\"http:\/\/researchimpact.files.wordpress.com\/2010\/03\/tim_brodhead2.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"134\" height=\"121\" \/><\/a>Many participants were asked the same question, \u201cIf you could tell the university to do one thing over the next year, what would it be?\u201d  We heard the following:<br \/>\n1) Engage in more brokering<br \/>\n\u2022\tResearchImpact-York has received over 150 requests for research brokering and will continue to do more<br \/>\n2) Create time\/incentives\/rewards for faculty to engage in KM<br \/>\n\u2022\tWe see this frequently.  CHSRF has held some conversations with VPs Academic and Provosts but little progress has been made on including community engaged research in tenure &amp; promotion<br \/>\n3) Create a learning cycle around KM<br \/>\n\u2022\tResearchImpact-York has created the KM P2P network, we\u2019re developing KM tools, and we are active in the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ktecop.ca\/\">Ontario KTE CoP<\/a><br \/>\n4) \u201cUniversities are leaders in tradition\u201d &#8211; become more open<br \/>\n\u2022\tYork has recently released the Provost\u2019s <a href=\"http:\/\/vpacademic.yorku.ca\/whitepaper\/docs\/White_Paper_February.pdf\">White Paper<\/a> providing a vision of York as Canada\u2019s engaged university<br \/>\n5) Develop evaluation tools for KM<br \/>\n\u2022\tSummer 2009 York conducted a formal evaluation of the last 4 years of KM.  This report and recommendations arising from the repor will be presented on this blog soon.<br \/>\n6) Support digital literacy as an emerging skill-set<br \/>\n\u2022\tSee York\u2019s initiatives like the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.yorku.ca\/irlt\/\">Institute for Research on Learning Technologies<\/a>, our work on O3, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.abelearn.ca\">ABEL<\/a> and other resources such as we wrote in <a href=\"http:\/\/researchimpact.wordpress.com\/2009\/08\/19\/cage-match-tapscott-vs-weinberg\">this blog post<\/a><br \/>\n<a href=\"http:\/\/researchimpact.files.wordpress.com\/2010\/03\/bee.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-1615\" style=\"margin:5px;\" title=\"Bee\" src=\"http:\/\/researchimpact.files.wordpress.com\/2010\/03\/bee.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"108\" height=\"89\" \/><\/a>Throughout the 2010 Expo the theme was bees. We asked ourselves the question, \u201cto b or not to b\u201d and we decided to b.
