Kennedy School of Government, Harvard  University) wrote \u201cKnowledge systems for sustainable development\u201d [Proc. Natl. Acad. Sci. U.S.A. 100: 8086].\u00a0 Read the full article <a href=\"http:\/\/www.pnas.org\/content\/100\/14\/8086.full.pdf+html\">here<\/a>.<br \/>\n<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-969\" style=\"margin:5px;\" title=\"PNAS July 2003\" src=\"http:\/\/researchimpact.files.wordpress.com\/2009\/09\/pnas-july-20031.gif\" alt=\"PNAS July 2003\" width=\"134\" height=\"178\" \/>How many of these key points from the article sound familiar to you?<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Effective knowledge systems engage in communication, translation and mediation<\/li>\n<li>Efforts to mobilize are more likely to be effective when they manage boundaries between knowledge and action<\/li>\n<li>Active, iterative, and inclusive communication between experts and decision makers proves crucial to systems that mobilize knowledge<\/li>\n<li>Mobilizing requires active mediation (at ResearchImpact we call this knowledge brokering)<\/li>\n<li>Mediation works through increasing transparency (for more on transparency, see our blog on <a href=\"http:\/\/researchimpact.wordpress.com\/2009\/08\/25\/the-km-solution-pt-2-%E2%80%9Cso-what%E2%80%9D\/\">August 25, 2009<\/a>)<a href=\"..\/2009\/08\/25\/the-km-solution-pt-2-%E2%80%9Cso-what%E2%80%9D\/\"><\/a><\/li>\n<li>Systems mobilize knowledge for action by translations that facilitate mutual comprehension<\/li>\n<li>Mediation activities help make the boundary between experts and decision makers selectively porous<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>If you got 7 out of 7 congratulations, you\u2019re new knowledge isn\u2019t so new!<br \/>\nEmploying these methods of communication, translation and mediation enables an organization to become a boundary organization.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cThese functions can be institutionalized in \u2018boundary organizations\u2019, organizations mandated to act as intermediaries between the arenas of science and policy. As originally conceived, boundary organizations have at least three features: (<em>i<\/em>) they involve specialized roles within the organization for managing the boundary; (<em>ii<\/em>) they have clear lines of responsibility and accountability to distinct social arenas on opposite sides of the boundary; and (<em>iii<\/em>) they provide a forum in which information can be co-produced by actors from different sides of the boundary through the use of \u2018boundary objects\u2019\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Note the emphasis on co-production, something we highlighted in our recent paper in <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ingentaconnect.com\/content\/tpp\/ep\/2009\/00000005\/00000003\/art00002\">Evidence &amp; Policy<\/a>.<br \/>\nSo, we might as well all go home as in 2003 David Cash and his colleagues wrote all that I could ever want to write in 2009.\u00a0 The challenge now is to practice what he preached.\u00a0 York University, the University of Victoria and ResearchImpact are boundary organizations.\u00a0 Our knowledge brokers have a foot in both (ok, many) camps and seek to continuously make boundaries pourous by increasing transparency allowing knowledge to be co-produced by researchers and decision makers.<br \/>\nHold the date of February 9, 2010 for our 3<sup>rd<\/sup> annual KM Expo that will feature discussions of boundaries and means of overcoming them.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Many of us think that KM (KT\/KE\/KTE\/KI\/KMb&#8230;
