{"id":12611,"date":"2009-03-20T09:00:03","date_gmt":"2009-03-20T13:00:03","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/researchimpact.ydsinc.ca\/inspiring-words-from-bangladesh-inspire-reflection\/"},"modified":"2021-11-23T09:52:58","modified_gmt":"2021-11-23T14:52:58","slug":"inspiring-words-from-bangladesh-inspire-reflection","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/researchimpact.ca\/fr\/archive\/inspiring-words-from-bangladesh-inspire-reflection\/","title":{"rendered":"Inspiring Words from Bangladesh Inspire Reflection"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><!--[if gte mso 9]&gt;  Normal 0   false false false        MicrosoftInternetExplorer4  &lt;![endif]--><!--[if gte mso 9]&gt;   &lt;![endif]--><!--[if !mso]&gt;--><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">I am reading <em>Getting to Maybe<\/em> by Westley, Zimmerman &amp; Patton (more on this book later) in which they reference the work of social innovator Muhammad Yunus, Head of the Economics Department at Chittagong University in Bangladesh.<span> <\/span>In 1974 Bangladesh was experiencing a famine but \u201cthe university grounds were an oasis\u201d.<span> <\/span>Yanus wrote, \u201cif a university is a repository of knowledge then some of this knowledge should spill over to the neighbouring communities.<span> <\/span>A university should not be an island where academics reach out at higher and higher levels of knowledge without sharing any of their findings\u00a0\u00bb.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">Theorizing that credit is a human right, he pioneered micro-credit giving small loans to groups of crafts people, many of the women.<span> <\/span>This process took a number of years of reflection and analysis following engaging many of the stakeholders involved before he took action.<span> <\/span>What do we learn from this social innovator?<span> <\/span>He is passionate but he questions.<span> <\/span>He acts in the face of uncertainty.<span> <\/span>His success was built on relationships.<span> <\/span>His success took time.
