INRS is a university dedicated exclusively to research and graduate training in strategic sectors in Quebec. For 55 years, it has actively contributed to Quebec’s economic, social and cultural development, notably through technology transfer, knowledge mobilization and partnerships that guide most of its research projects. It comprises four interdisciplinary research and training centers, located in Quebec City, Montreal, Laval and Varennes, focusing on strategic sectors: Centre Eau Terre Environnement, Centre Énergie Matériaux Télécommunications, Centre Urbanisation Culture Société and Centre Armand-Frappier Santé Biotechnologie.

Since 2020, in collaboration with five institutions in the Université du Québec network, five joint research units have been set up in the Saguenay-Lac-St-Jean (UQAC), Bas-Saint-Laurent (UQAR), Abitibi-Témiscamingue (UQAT), Outaouais (UQO) and Mauricie-Centre-du-Québec (UQTR) regions. The joint research units consolidate inter-university research and innovation clusters across Quebec, enhancing the local, national and international impact of INRS and its partners.

Nearly 165 professors supervise master’s and doctoral students, who contribute to fundamental and applied research in sectors of strategic importance to society. Graduate students choose INRS for its research performance and its training based on inclusion in interdisciplinary teams that address complex societal issues from different angles. INRS research teams operate in a stimulating, world-class environment featuring state-of-the-art research facilities. Whether with other universities, companies or public or community organizations, in Quebec or abroad, INRS is expanding its strategic alliances to innovate and push the boundaries of knowledge by offering a series of measures in support of partnered research. The Service des partenariats stratégiques et du soutien à l’innovation assists the research community in developing partnership opportunities, implementing collaborative projects, supporting entrepreneurship and leveraging research results (intellectual property management, social innovation). INRS is also the only Canadian institution to offer for-credit French-language training programs (short program, DESS and professional master’s) in knowledge mobilization and transfer.

INRS ranks 1st  in Canada for research intensity according to Research InfoSource, and heads up the list of the world’s top-performing universities in terms of sustainability research according to the Association for the Advancement of Sustainability in Higher Education. These accolades testify to INRS’s status as a leading research establishment, and a key player in building partnerships and training future scientific leaders.
